My Most Anticipated Books of 2021

Thursday, November 12, 2020

It's been quite the year as we have all experienced and with a new year ahead there is something to look forward to - new books. With only two months away from 2021, I have been coming across a number of great books that will be released next year that I have already added to my To Be Read list. There are a variety ranging from sequels, repeat authors, and debut novels with plots varying from mystery and romance to drama and science fiction. Below is my own list of books that I am really looking forward to reading next year. Feel free to jump into the comments and share your own list as well.

Malibu Rising
by Taylor Jenkins Reid  (May 27, 2021)

As a fan of Taylor Jenkins Reid ever since I read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six, I was thrilled when she announced her next book, Malibu Rising, which also happens to be in the same universe as her previous two books.

Set in the early 1980s, Malibu Rising follows Nina Riva, the daughter of Mick Riva featured in The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and her siblings Jay, Hud, and Kit as they host their annual end of the summer party on a night that is bound to reveal and examine all of their secrets and anxieties.

Based on the entire synopsis, I am already getting vibes to West Coast set movies such as Take Me Home Tonight, Valley Girl, Less Than Zero, and Some Kind of Wonderful. Knowing Taylor Jenkins Reid, she will give us a great story of a night we will never forget.

The Heart Principle by Helen Hoang  (August 17, 2021)

Words cannot even begin to describe how long I have been waiting for this third book to The Kiss Quotient series. I actually thought at one point that it was coming out this year after they revealed the cover.

The Kiss Quotient began with Stella Lane, a mathematician with Asperger's syndrome, who hires an escort, Michael Phan, to help her on the physical elements of dating. The sequel, The Bride Test, then follows Michael's young friend, Khai Diep, who also has Asperger's, after his mother arranges a young woman from Vietnam named Esme Tran to marry him. The Heart Principle now follows Michael's best friend and fan favorite, Quan Diep, who may have finally met his match in Anna Sun.

For avid fans of The Kiss Quotient series and new readers looking for a new kind of romance novel, this one is for you.

Survive the Night by Riley Sager  (July 6, 2021)

Having just finished reading Home Before Dark, I was eager to find out what Riley Sager's next book would be. I was surprised to learn that compared to his other four books that played with well-known horror tropes, his next book will be more of an original story sans tropes, which I find to be honestly refreshing. Even the cover art is different from his other books. Judging by the plot, there is still sure to be twist, turns, and spine tingling suspense that you would expect from him to deliver.

The year is 1991 and Charlie Jordan has hitched a ride with Josh Baxter for a lift home after meeting at the college campus ride board. However, as the two get to know each other on the long road ahead, she begins to suspect that her seemingly innocent driver may actually be the serial Campus Killer. It's definitely bound to be a bumpy night and all Charlie will have to do is survive it.

Arsenic and Adobo by Mia P. Manansala  (May 4, 2021)

Who here loves a good fun mystery? Well, here is one that I am excited to read, especially as it features a Filipino lead and her family that blends both elements of comedy and surprisingly, murder.

Lila Macapagal has moved back home to help out her Tita Rosie's failing restaurant and to get over a recent breakup. However, just as she thinks her overbearing aunts were enough, now she will have to deal with a murder when a food critic - who just happens to be her ex-boyfriend - drops dead. With Lila as the police's first and only suspect and a greedy landlord ready to kick out the Macapagals, Lila is on the case to clear her name and save her Tita Rosie's business.

I'm calling it now. everyone will be Googling Filipino recipes after this book comes out. Hopefully without any poison.

Anna 'K Away by Jenny Lee  (April 27, 2021)

If you read my post a while back on Jenny Lee's debut novel, Anna K., then you know how much I ended up really liking this book. It is probably one of my favorite books I read this year and surprisingly so as it is a modern day retelling of Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. As we know, the original novel ended as is. However, following the events at the end of Anna K, Jenny Lee provides us with a sequel on what happens after.

Anna K has found herself in South Korea after the scandal of her affair with Alexia "Count" Vronsky ruined her perfect reputation. Far from home, Anna must comes to terms with not only how to move on, but who she really is after surviving her first love and heartbreak. Meanwhile back home, there is still more drama ahead for the rest of Anna's friends as the consequences of the past and the events that unfolded will affect them in new ways as they also try to move forward.

People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry (May 11, 2021)

After reading Beach Read, I was not prepared for a new book by Emily Henry so soon, but was thankful when it was announced.

Emily Henry is back with a new novel arriving next summer. This time we follow two friends and total opposites, Poppy and Alex. The two have been going on vacation together annually until their last trip turned into a disaster ruining their friendship. Now two years later, Poppy has convinced Alex to go on one last trip together in the hopes of clearing the air to which he agrees to. With Poppy hoping to rekindle their friendship here's praying things will turn out smoothly... so they both hope.

A Special Place for Women by Laura Hankin (May 11, 2021)

With a plot that seems to be inspired by the controversy surrounding the real-life social club, The Wing, Laura Hankin invites readers through the doors of a fictional exclusive female club, where young journalist, Jillian Beckley, decides to uncover the truth behind the beautiful and seemingly "uplifting" veneer it upholds.

As someone who was initially a fan of The Wing and its Instagram-able facilities until details surrounding its controversy came to light, I am very interested if not curious to read what Laura Hankin will explore. According to her recent tweet, she describes her book as "NEVER BEEN KISSED set in a more secretive version of The Wing, with some PRACTICAL MAGIC vibes!" Now I am definitely intrigued.

Much Ado About You by Samantha Young (February 2, 2021)

Sometimes an escape to a quaint English hamlet is just the thing you need when you need to reevaluate your life. That's what Evangeline "Evie" Starling decides to do in Samantha Young's upcoming novel.

After being passed up for a promotion and feeling like something is missing in her life, Evie decides to leave the comforts of Chicago for some much needed R 'n R in a small English village. During her stay, she ends up working at a bookstore called Much Ado About Books where she ends up getting to know its friendly customers and possibly finds romance with a flirtatious handsome farmer.

The Shimmering State by Meredith Westgate (August 10, 2021)

When I first read the plotline for this book, I immediately thought of Blake Crouch's Recursion and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, except this one is set in the City of Angels where everything on the outside may not be what it seems.

Meredith Westgate crafts a novel following two people, Lucien and Sophie, who become inexplicably tied together when they become involved in an experimental memory drug. Although the two go on their own separate journeys before meeting at The Center, where individuals are treated for abusing the drug, the two feel somehow drawn to each other unsure of whether its their attraction towards one another or something beyond what they can remember.

Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto (April 27, 2021)

Weddings can be quite the occasion, especially when there is a dead body that needs to be get rid of ASAP.

Meddelin "Meddy" Chan never expected to kill her blind date - it was just an accident! When she calls upon her mother for help, she also enlists Meddy's aunts for assistance to dispose the body. However things take an extremely unexpected turn when the body ends up in the same cake cooler that was sent to a billionaire's wedding Meddy and her family have been working on. Apart from that, there is also the handsome former flame Meddy runs into at the wedding making things even all the more complicated.

To Love and to Loathe by Martha Waters (April 6, 2021)

If you are a fan of Evie Dunmore and Lyssa Kay Adams, with just a bit of an obsessive attraction to Mr. Darcy, then you will likely enjoy this book by Martha Waters.

Set in the Regency era, a Lady and a Marquess strike up deal to engage in a private affair to help each other improve in the bedroom. While Jeremy, Marquess of Willingham hopes to use his new skills to find a wife, widowed Diana, Lady Templeton, will use the gossip to invoke her interest in taking a lover of her own. What could possibly go wrong for two people who supposedly hate each other?
